Grey water

What is grey water? Grey water is used household water that comes from showers, sinks, and laundrette. Maybe there is a second life for grey water. In SUPERLOCAL different experiments will be carried out to test for which purposes this water can be used. One of the options for grey water is public carwash and/or public laundry. Using grey water instead of drink water means flatting of the water demand peak and lesser Drinkwater waste.

In SUPERLOCAL-monitoring will take place to understand the dynamics of rainwater quality and quantity. Furthermore, a robust modulair purification plant will be built.  At least a year of testing will be done before the local made drinking water will be provided to the households. This experiment should provide insights whether a local system has potential for such situations.

The quality of rainwater is monitored by different quality meters. There are nine different quality meters in the rainwater system. One of the meters is the environment meter.

The environment meter measures the precipitation, solar radiation, wind speed and direction, relative air humidity and temperature. Every quality meter has its units of measurement. The debit-flow measurements are the amount of water that enters the pre-filter from the roof and paved surface.

Helophyto filter

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#ffffff”][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]

A helophyte filter will be installed in the water park. A helophyte filter is a natural purification system that can purify rainwater and used water. In addition to purifying water, the helophyte filter must also have a positive effect on flora and fauna.

The greywater in the households is discharged and collected under free fall in the greywater buffer. The greywater in the greywater buffer will be pumped to a greywater treatment. The greywater treatment is helophyte filter. At temperature decrease through the helophyte filter, the quality of the water improves. This indicates that there are fewer biological developments. After the water has passed through the helophyte filter (1,5 days), the purified water is collected under free fall in the effluent buffer.
Various samples are taken in the helophyte filter to test whether the helophyte filter is efficient. The samples related to purification and flow. The monitored Water in the effluent buffer can be used for public car wash and laundry.

Common car wash

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]

When residents wash cars on the street oil is often spilt. This could potentially affect the drinking water production system. The SUPERLOCAL car wash ensures that there are no spills and leaks to the surface and groundwater. Greywater can be used as washing water after the greywater has been filtered by the helophyte filter and additional purification step, however, it isn’t clean enough for it to be drinking water. Moreover, by using purified grey water less freshwater is used in the neighbourhood. Only three m3 of the total of twenty m3 water will be used to wash cars. It is also a social solution, in addition to a water solution. Residents can have a good conversation with each other.

Common laundrette

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]

After filtering greywater by the helophyte filter and additional purification step, greywater can be used as washing water. However, it isn’t clean enough for it to be drinking water. Only five m3 of the total twenty m3 greywater will be used to do their wash. In addition to a water solution, it is also a social solution. The residents of SUPERLOCAL get access to the washing machines while enjoying a cup of coffee and a good conversation with other residents. The benefits of common laundrettes are often not considered in the Netherlands.
