Situated on a former industrial plot in de docks of Gent, De Nieuwe Dokken is building dwellings for 244 households, including 3 office buildings, 2 communal buildings and 20 shops. The sustainably initiative of this urban development is marked by the designation of the area as a car-free zone, heating supply out of excess heat from neighbouring active industrial plants and source separation between grey-water and black water from vacuum toilets and grinder processed food waste. The biogas created in this process is subsequently used as energy source and struvite for fertilisation. Reclaimed water is treated on-site and used as process water in neighbouring industry.
